On the Waterfront is a 1954 film directed by Elia Kazan. The film is set in New York and explores union violence, corruption and extortion, and is seen as a reflection of the political environment at the time, especially concerning McCarthyism and Kazan's involvement with investigations concerning communists in the American film industry.

The film was notable for actor Marlon Brando, who would later appear in classic films such as Apocalypse Now and The Godfather. On the Waterfront won eight Academy Awards and was listed as the eighth greatest American movie of all time.
